Bonneville Salt Flats

The first stop of our Ultimate Utah Road Trip was the Bonneville Salt Flats. This was one of our favorite stops of the whole trip! I know that sounds so crazy since we got to see some pretty amazing National Parks but let me explain why.

Golden Hour at Bonneville

The Bonneville Salt Flats are about an hour and a half outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. It is a straight shot so it is a super easy drive. The salt flats are essentially just this desert of hard-packed salt that goes on for miles. This may not sound like much, but let me tell you, it is stunning!!

They are right off the highway so you can’t miss it. If you enter Bonneville Salt Flats in your GPS it will try to take you to the Bonneville Speedway which is right up the road at the next exit. The salt flats are so wide open and flat that they actually have races out there. They even try to beat the fastest land speed. Be sure to check their schedule to plan your trip around them if that is something you would want to see.

Bonneville Salt Flats

Okay, so here is why we put the salt flats at the top of our list. They are free to visit and completely wide open and not crowded at all. There were so many other people out there hanging out, camping, taking photos, and more. Even though there were plenty of other people around, we still had so much room to do what we wanted. It just felt like we had wide-open space to be creative and enjoy the sunset.

Speaking of sunset, I highly recommend going in the evening. You can catch some killer sunsets here with stunning mountain silhouettes. We also loved that you could drive around on the flats and explore. I mean it truly felt like we had the place to ourselves. It just was so special and magical!

If you are ever in the area, I can’t recommend visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats enough. Even if you don’t think it is as cool as we did, I guarantee you won’t want to miss marking it off your bucket list. If you want to see more on our Ultimate Utah Road Trip, check out our itinerary here.
